Correlations between spatial sampling biases and environmental niches affect species distribution models

چکیده
Aim Spatial sampling biases in biodiversity data arise because of complex interactions between geography, species characteristics and human behaviour, including preferences for or against particular habitats; are therefore not necessarily independent the environmental niches species. We evaluate when correlations spatial likely to affect distribution models (SDMs) developed both with without attempts correct these biases. Innovation A virtual ecologist framework was used simulate either no bias that were correlated (positively negatively) one variables define The niche simulated autocorrelation operating at multiple scales. Virtual samples then model distributions, evaluated based on their ability rank suitability sites correctly. Main conclusions Correlations frequently reduced correlation predictions, but relative importance effects varied type (greater decline as broadens) (models built using detection/non-detection less affected than those detection-only data). Bias-correction effectiveness depending structure also highly variable across methods dependent type. implications results is a greater concern SDMs where: (1) effort non-random respect an gradient thought be species’ distribution; (2) being modelled has broad niche; (3) modelling contain only information detections (i.e., presence only).

Complex relationships between species niches and environmental heterogeneity affect species co-occurrence patterns in modelled and real communities.
Species co-occurrence analysis is commonly used to assess how interspecific interactions dictate community assembly. Non-random co-occurrences, however, may also emerge from niche differences as well as environmental heterogeneity. The relationships between species co-occurrence patterns, environmental heterogeneity and species niches are not fully understood, due to complex interactions among ...
متن کاملA Sampling and Analytical Approach to Develop Spatial Distribution Models for Sagebrush-Associated Species
Understanding multi-scale floral and faunal responses to human land use is crucial for informing natural resource management and conservation planning. However, our knowledge on how land use influences sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) ecosystems is limited primarily to site-specific studies. To fill this void, studies across large regions are needed that address how species are distributed relative t...

Motivation Kallel (2005, 2007) has claimed that the time course of the change from a negative concord system to an NPI-based one in the history of English is better modeled by a quadratic function in logistic space than by a linear one. The use of logistic functions to model language change (and specifically syntactic change) was championed by Kroch (1989), and since the publication of that wor...
متن کاملSpatial Neutral to the Right Species Sampling Mixture Models
The field of Bayesian nonparametric statistics essentially involves the idea of assigning prior and posterior distributions over spaces of probability measures or more general measures. That is, similar to the classical parametric Bayesian idea of assigning priors to an unknown parameter say θ which lies in a Euclidean space, one views, for instance, an unknown cumulative distribution function ...
متن کاملSpatial distribution and ecological niches of non-breeding planktivorous petrels
According to niche theory, mechanisms exist that allow co-existence of organisms that would otherwise compete for the same prey and other resources. How seabirds cope with potential competition during the non-breeding period is poorly documented, particularly for small species. Here we investigate for the first time the potential role of spatial, environmental (habitat) and trophic (isotopic) s...
